Ramsgate to Gatwick by airport taxi: planning the drive from harbour to terminal

A Ramsgate to Gatwick airport taxi takes you from the Royal Harbour, either cliff or one of the villages west of the town to the Sussex terminals in a single journey, with your cases in the boot rather than on a luggage rack. The typical drive is 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, and the fare is fixed for the whole car before you book.

Below is what to plan for: the roads the car takes, how to work out a pickup time for an early departure, which terminal to give us, where the driver meets you in Ramsgate and how the journey home works. The times are the typical figures Express Travel Kent publishes; on the day, traffic and roadworks can move them either way.

The Ramsgate to Gatwick airport taxi route

Almost every trip starts the same way: out of town on the A299 Hengist Way, past Cliffsend and the Minster roundabout, towards the M2. From there the driver has two sensible options. One uses the M20; the other takes the M25 round to the M23, the motorway that serves the airport. Which one is better depends on closures and traffic that day, and the choice is made on the road.

A diversion does not alter what you pay. The fixed fare stays the same if a closure sends the car the longer way, which matters because overnight roadworks on the M2 and M25 are common. That is one reason a run in the small hours is not always quicker than you might expect from empty roads.

Working out a pickup time for an early Gatwick flight

Start from the time your airline wants you at bag drop, which is on your booking or the airline's website, rather than from the departure time. Take off two hours, the top of the typical range for the drive, then take off a further half hour as a cushion against roadworks. If you want to be at bag drop by 06:00, that gives a pickup at about 03:30.

Be ready a few minutes early. The driver waits at your address for 10 minutes after the agreed time at no charge; after that, waiting is charged at the standard rate. The fare is the same whether you leave at half past three in the morning or at midday, and on weekends and bank holidays too.

  • Check the check-in or bag drop deadline with your airline.
  • Allow up to 2 hours for the drive, plus a 30-minute cushion.
  • Add more on a Friday afternoon or the first day of the school holidays, when the M25 can add 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Give us the flight number so the booking matches the right terminal.

North Terminal or South Terminal?

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South. Your airline's confirmation says which one you need; give it to us when you book and the driver heads for that forecourt. If you discover at the last minute that it is the other one, it is easily fixed: a free shuttle links the two, runs every few minutes around the clock and takes about two minutes. Its South Terminal station is close to the railway station.

Where the car collects you in Ramsgate

Most pickups are simply your front door. A few places need a word when you book:

  • The marina: Military Road, along the inner basin, is not an adopted public road, so we fix a meeting point with you rather than guessing at a berth.
  • The East Cliff: Madeira Walk, Wellington Crescent and Victoria Parade form the B2054, which has served as the diversion when Harbour Street and High Street close, so allow for a slower start on those days.
  • Cliffsend: the railway cuts the village in two, so say which side of the line you live on.
  • Thanet Parkway: if you would rather meet the car at the station between Ramsgate and Minster, note that its car park is paid.
  • Minster, Monkton, Manston, Pegwell and Ebbsfleet near Cliffsend are booked in exactly the same way as an address in town.

Choosing a car for your luggage

The fare is per car, so it pays to pick the right one. From the fleet: a saloon takes up to four passengers and two large cases; an estate takes four passengers and three or four large cases; the executive car takes four with two or three large cases; and the people carrier takes up to six passengers with four or more large cases.

A family of four with a large case each will not fit in a saloon. Choose the estate, or the people carrier if there are pushchairs or golf bags as well. Child seats are available on request: tell us the ages when you book.

Flying home: the Gatwick to Ramsgate leg

You can book the return together with the outbound or on its own later. Give us the flight number and we follow the flight, timing the collection to when it actually lands rather than to the timetable. If it is delayed for reasons outside your control, there is no extra charge.

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board and helps you with the cases to the car. Free waiting runs from the actual landing time: 45 minutes after an international flight and 30 minutes after a domestic one, which leaves room for passport control and the baggage belt. The drive back to Ramsgate takes about as long as the outward one.

What the fixed fare covers, and what can be added

Enter your Ramsgate address and the booking system shows the fare at once. Once confirmed, it does not change unless the journey does: traffic, a diversion, an early start or a bank holiday make no difference. The few things that can be added are:

  • waiting beyond the free time;
  • extra stops that were not in the booking;
  • big route changes you ask for on the way;
  • car parking fees or tolls on the journey, where they apply.

Paying and cancelling

You can pay online by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or Revolut, and the code ExpressTravelKent gives 10% off in the online booking system. Cancelling more than 24 hours before pickup is free; between 6 and 24 hours, up to half the fare may be charged, and inside 6 hours, or once the car has set off, the full fare may be due.

Common Questions

Questions travellers ask

Typically 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours from a Ramsgate address to the terminal. Plan around the top of that range and add a margin for roadworks.

High-speed trains reach St Pancras in about 70 minutes from Thanet Parkway, but Gatwick is not on that line, so you cross London and change trains with your luggage. The car goes straight to the terminal forecourt.

No. The fixed fare is the same at 3am, at weekends and on bank holidays.

Yes. Any address in CT11 or CT12 is covered, and the booking system shows the fare for your exact address before you confirm.
